Greetings from the Governor (Washington State Governor),
I am pleased to welcome all of those attending the 2004 Youth Invitational Martial Arts Championship, hosted by the American Vovinam Institute. I am confident that you will be impressed by the agility and strength of these outstanding athletes. Each has worked tremendously hard to achieve this level of skill.
This exciting sport helps young people to attain their peak physical conditioning and learn how to defend themselves effectively. Perhaps more importantly, it enlarges a student's perception of what can be accomplished through hard work and discipline. By emphasizing self-control, respect for oneself and one's neighbors, integrity, responsibility, and excellence in every arena of life, programs such as these guide boys and girls into becoming more productive and successful adults.
I commend the American Vovinam Institute for its strong commitment to children, its active involvement in cultural events such as the Tet (*Tet: vietnamesisk Nytår) in Seattle Festival, and its generous support of social service and community programs.
